Cyprus to Help Bulgaria Have EU Payments Unfrozen 12|10|2009:

President Georgi Parvanov was on a two-day official visit to Cyprus.  His Cypriot counterpart Dimitris Christofias told a joint press conference that Cyprus would seek to help Bulgaria in de-blocking EU payments, which would in turn contribute to enlivening the Bulgarian economy. For his part, President Georgi Parvanov pointed to a positive trend in economic collaboration, concerning both the turnover and the not inconsiderable volume of Cypriot investments in Bulgaria.

As regards the Cyprus issue, President Christofias has assured President Parvanov that the Cypriot side was prepared for a resolution of the problem and that it would continue to take part in the talks, upholding principled positions in view of attaining a double-zone and double-community federation with political parity. President Christofias thanked Bulgaria for its principled position on the issue. Bulgaria will contribute to the attainment of a positive outcome both as a EU and UN member state. The two presidents signed a Joint Declaration on Bilateral Relations between Bulgaria and Cyprus. The two presidents witnessed the signing of an intergovernmental Programme on science, education and culture over 2009-2011 and unveiled a Cyprus, Bulgaria Bulgaria Business Forum in Nicosia.

Later on Friday President Georgi Parvanov conferred with Speaker of the Cypriot Parliament Maris Garoyan and the Mayor of Nicosia Eleni Mavrou.
